In NGOs, the extreme consequences of not providing the necessary help (e.g. leaving people in danger or worse losing human lives) can trigger the emergence of burnout in volunteers, especially when there is no room for intervention. This study aimed to explore whether the association between loss aversion and burnout is greater when there is no control on losses. Results showed that people who perceived high burnout were associated with less joy in helping. Findings support the association between loss aversion and burnout, especially in conditions with low perceived control on environmental factors.

Abstract

In NGOs, the extreme consequences of not providing the necessary help (e.g. leaving people in danger or worse losing human lives) can trigger the emergence of burnout in volunteers, especially when there is no room for intervention. This study aimed to explore whether the association between loss aversion and burnout is greater when there is no control on losses. Results showed that people who perceived high burnout were associated with less joy in helping. Findings support the association between loss aversion and burnout, especially in conditions with low perceived control on environmental factors.
