Abstract

This contribution deals with a restricted class of Russian verbs manifesting morphological and semantic analogies with Italian “parasynthetic verbs”. Parasynthesis is a derivational phenomenon traditionally interpreted as the simultaneous addition of a prefix and a suffix to a nominal or adjectival base. In a parasynthetic formation, in fact, neither the base plus the suffix [X+suff] nor the prefix plus the base [pref+X] are attested words in the considered language. Although the issue has been investigated since the end of Nineteenth Century, no conclusive solution has been reached so far. Starting from the most convincing analyses proposed for Romance parasynthetic verbs, the paper outlines an original rationale for the Russian verbs at issue, taking into account the theoretical assumptions of Lexicalist Morphology and Natural Morphology.
