Cooking pottery is a crucial guide in medieval research, providing the only dating element available before the introduction of glazed ceramics. Yet, numerous questions persist for the 11th-14th century in the Padana area. We lack information about production centers and potential commercial routes; identifying the ceramic facies from the 11th-12th century is challenging, and dating often encompasses broad ranges. These uncertainties significantly impact studies, especially without absolute dating methods like thermoluminescence or 14C, making it challenging to assess societal evolution and settlement patterns. In recent years, examining ceramic contexts in the Reggiano and surrounding areas, I constructed a chronotypological seriation of ceramics based on stratigraphy from the 11th to 14v centuries. Though not definitive, this framework, subject to future adjustments, can contribute to advancing the ongoing scholarly debate.
