Between the end of XIX and the beginning of XX century, Aristide Baragiola studied, drawned and photographed a great number of traditional mountain houses in three Alpine areas occupied by German speaking communities. The Archives Baragiola, at Musei Civici di Como, have been rearranged and studied; in this article, the interest of Baragiola for the traditional house is inserted in its historical background, and the contribution of Baragiola to archaeological and ethnoarchaeological studies is discussed.
