This book contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Information Retrieval (KDIR 2011). This conference is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and this year it is hosted by the University PARIS-EST Créteil (UPEC) at the campus of Sénart. KDIR 2011 was held in cooperation with the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the ACM Special Interest Group on Management Information Systems (ACM SIGMIS), the LISSI Laboratory and the Information & Knowledge Management Society (IKMS). The primary focus of KDIR is to provide a major forum for the scientific and technical advancement of knowledge discovery and information retrieval. Knowledge Discovery is an interdisciplinary area focusing upon methodologies for identifying valid, novel, potentially useful and meaningful patterns from data, often based on underlying large data sets
