The aquatic biomass is still largely unexploited as a source of raw materials for the production of chemicals of high value. In addition, this biomass may be treated by bioconversion (aerobic or anaerobic fermentation) to give useful products (eg. gas, fertilizer) and it also has uses in the removal of environmental pollution. Macrophytic aquatic plants could provide an answer to various problems concerning the purification of waste water.
