The article, after illustrating the current spread and diversification of the English language (World English and English as a Lingua Franca), explores implications for language teaching. Issues such as the Native Speaker model and the concept of communicative competence and intercultural communicative competence are discussed, and possible more inclusive didactic practices are set forwatd, not least in terms of ELT materials and international school partnerships.
