Seventy-three Southern Italian red wines werecharacterized according to their content in total polyphenols,trans- and cis-resveratrol and biogenic amines. Thesequality parameters were used in multivariate statisticalanalysis to discriminate the wines according to their speciWcgeographical origin. The results indicated that totalpolyphenols, resveratrol isomers and biogenic amines providea good prospect for discriminating wines by regions. The discrimination was also possible to a lesser extent bycultivar. In particular, canonical variate analysis suggestedthat the discrimination of wines according to their provenanceis based on the following parameters: cis-resveratrol,total polyphenols, spermidine and tryptamine for Basilicataregion; agmatine and trans-resveratrol for Calabria andCampania regions; cadaverine, ethanolamine, histamine, putrescine and tyramine for Puglia region.

Abstract
Seventy-three Southern Italian red wines werecharacterized according to their content in total polyphenols,trans- and cis-resveratrol and biogenic amines. Thesequality parameters were used in multivariate statisticalanalysis to discriminate the wines according to their speciWcgeographical origin. The results indicated that totalpolyphenols, resveratrol isomers and biogenic amines providea good prospect for discriminating wines by regions. The discrimination was also possible to a lesser extent bycultivar. In particular, canonical variate analysis suggestedthat the discrimination of wines according to their provenanceis based on the following parameters: cis-resveratrol,total polyphenols, spermidine and tryptamine for Basilicataregion; agmatine and trans-resveratrol for Calabria andCampania regions; cadaverine, ethanolamine, histamine, putrescine and tyramine for Puglia region.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
