Raw or pre-digested swine slurries are rich in ammonia and should be adequately treated before discharge, especially when the livestock is located in nitrate vulnerable areas. Even though nutrients recovery should be pursued, the removal by biological treatments is still a viable option due to the CAPEX and OPEX. Among the biological treatment, short-cut nitrogen removal may allow to save energy (25% lower oxygen consumption) and carbon source (40% lower electron donor requirement). This presentation will deal with the start-up and long term operation of a SBR that treats real anaerobic digestate coming from swine wastewaters by an hybrid suspended/granular sludge. In a microaerophilic environment, the nitrogen removal was higher than 95% mainly due to granules. However, the process sensitivity is high and its optimization is currently under investigation
