Although in Italy since 1998 the preconception counseling is part of the free services offered by the National Health System (Ministry of Health Recommendation, 1998 Sept 10) very few health care providers (HCP) actively are offering this service and very few women are asking for it. The situation is not improved in the last years despite some national and/or regional efforts to increase one or more aims of the whole preconception counseling, such as the increase of folic acid supplements (Folic Acid National Network, Genitori Più Project), the control of diabetes (Diabetes Project), smoking cessation (Mothers Without Smoking Project). During the last three years the Alessandra Lisi International Centre of Birth Defects and Prematurity (ICBD) through a small grant and the support of the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with a team of experts in reproductive health (GLISP - Italian Group on Preconception Health) and representatives of more than 20 maternal and child health scientific organizations, planned and implemented a project to rise the awareness, knowledge, and practice on preconception health.

Abstract
Although in Italy since 1998 the preconception counseling is part of the free services offered by the National Health System (Ministry of Health Recommendation, 1998 Sept 10) very few health care providers (HCP) actively are offering this service and very few women are asking for it. The situation is not improved in the last years despite some national and/or regional efforts to increase one or more aims of the whole preconception counseling, such as the increase of folic acid supplements (Folic Acid National Network, Genitori Più Project), the control of diabetes (Diabetes Project), smoking cessation (Mothers Without Smoking Project). During the last three years the Alessandra Lisi International Centre of Birth Defects and Prematurity (ICBD) through a small grant and the support of the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with a team of experts in reproductive health (GLISP - Italian Group on Preconception Health) and representatives of more than 20 maternal and child health scientific organizations, planned and implemented a project to rise the awareness, knowledge, and practice on preconception health.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
