We consider left and right almost split morphisms for a skeletally small subcategory of the category of all modules over an arbitrary ring, and we interpret their existence in terms of finiteness conditions of modules over their endomorphism ring. We also study generalized right almost split morphisms, a concept introduced by Brune, and a characterization of pure-semisimple rings.

Abstract
We consider left and right almost split morphisms for a skeletally small subcategory of the category of all modules over an arbitrary ring, and we interpret their existence in terms of finiteness conditions of modules over their endomorphism ring. We also study generalized right almost split morphisms, a concept introduced by Brune, and a characterization of pure-semisimple rings.
