Institutional changes produced by the single market and the euro had different impacts on the many European capitalisms. We read such effects from the variety of capitalism perspective, analysing the problem of European governance based on system competition when some constraints limit the autonomy of institutional change. The path-dependence of single models is said to be determined by national coalition of economic interests. In this context system competition may not bring the desired results.
