Introduction In industrialized country attempted suicides among young people are much more frequent in comparison with suicide cases among adult and old people: in Italy the rates per 100,000 inhabitants have increased from 3.6 in 1990 to 6.1 in 1998 while in Veneto these rates have increased from 2.3 in 1990 to 5.2 in 1998. In Verona District rates have increased from 6.6 to 8.9 during the triennial 1996-1998. Methods Special investigative forms filled in by Police or Carabinieri have been analysed one by one in order to examine suicide attempts which took place in Verona Municipality. Age, sex, marital status, qualifications, job, eventual existing disease, alcoholism, drug-addiction and means of attempted suicides have been examined for each single cases. Results In Verona Municipality 240 suicide attempts have been registered between years 1996-2000: 45% of these ones refer to males (average 40 years, range 13-86) and 55% refer to females (average 39 years, range 12-86). Their frequency is variable, with higher rates during spring time. From the analysis of data referring to the age it has been observed that this phenomenon is particularly frequent among young people and adults especially till 44 years, while a statistically decreasing rate is to be traced after this age. It has been observed that married people and widows are the less affected category. Divorce can be defined a risk condition. Unemployment represented a critical situation between social conditions. As far as the conditions which have been preceding the attempted suicide mental illness is present in 48.3% of the cases, with a predominance of depressive affliction. Discussion This phenomenon can been explained with the difficulties young people meet while living in a social context dominated by solitude, family disruption, emotional deprivation, lack of concrete future perspectives and with their difficulty to cope with disappointments and difficulty to keep self-control. Conclusion The aim to promote prevention is to create and develop a net engaging different areas (education, health, social life) for information, education and assistance.
