This paper aims at sketching the impact of Aristotle’s logic and metaphysics from Melanchthon to Hegel, a matter for which Leibniz plays a central role. Let me begin with Melanchthon. The three editions of his logic show a development from a Ciceronianism combined with Neoplatonism toward a recognition of the primacy of Aristotle. Like most Renaissance philosophers, though, Melanchthon felt a profound need of harmonizing Plato and Aristotle, whereby the latter, he said, should be considered for his clarity and the former for his depth.

Abstract: | This paper aims at sketching the impact of Aristotle’s logic and metaphysics from Melanchthon to Hegel, a matter for which Leibniz plays a central role. | |
