The presentation reviews the findings of three studies comparing reading comprehension on paper and on screen in beginner readers. The three studies adopt both a correlational and longitudinal design to analyze how the readers’ individual skills (reading skills, cognitive and metacognitive skills), text characteristics (reading medium and text genre), and reading activity (shallow or deep level of text comprehension) shape reading comprehension in Italian first graders. The main findings did not support an effect of the reading medium and a screen-reading disadvantage in beginner readers with good reading skills, and at shallow levels of text comprehension.

Abstract
The presentation reviews the findings of three studies comparing reading comprehension on paper and on screen in beginner readers. The three studies adopt both a correlational and longitudinal design to analyze how the readers’ individual skills (reading skills, cognitive and metacognitive skills), text characteristics (reading medium and text genre), and reading activity (shallow or deep level of text comprehension) shape reading comprehension in Italian first graders. The main findings did not support an effect of the reading medium and a screen-reading disadvantage in beginner readers with good reading skills, and at shallow levels of text comprehension.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
