This paper discusses the use of Diodorus Siculus as a source in some of the works by the Florentine humanist Cristoforo Landino (1425–1498). Due consideration is paid to a manuscript now in Florence, Biblioteca Riccardiana, n° 138. This is a typical humanist zibaldone, and it contains, among other materials, an abridged and unfinished Latin translation of Diodorus Siculus’ Bibliotheca historica, written by the hand of Landino and different from the Latin version produced by Poggio Bracciolini in 1449. Previous scholarship has been doubtful as regards the attribution of this ‘Riccardian’ translation to Landino. The paper, however, shows that this one, rather than that of Poggio, was used by Landino in his works, thus allowing some further considerations on the possible responsibility of Landino as author of the translation preserved in ms. Ricc. 138.

Abstract

Ricc. 138.
