Epigrafia e potere: la chiesa di San Girolamo dell'Arcoveggio e l'élite bolognese del XIV secolo

The Church of San Girolamo dell’Arcoveggio in Bologna represents a notable example of ecclesiastical foundation in the 14th century, as evidenced by an epigraph dated 1338. The inscription, which has received little scholarly attention to date, reveals not only the date and the founder, Nicolò di Deodato but also the designated patrons, who were connected to Bologna’s political elite at the time, particularly to Taddeo Pepoli. Through the analysis of the epigraph and a thorough examination of archival sources, the role of the individuals mentioned in the foundation and the choice of the church’s location becomes clear. This study presents a nuanced portrait of Bologna’s social, political, and religious dynamics in the 14th century, highlighting both the strategic significance of the foundation and the role of epigraphic memory as a tool for legitimation and representation.
