Lazzaro Bastiani’s “Saint Augustine giving the Rule to the canons” is the central panel of a polyptych that was said to be in the Church of San Salvador from the late XVI century. The story of the artwork has been a very troubled one and can be considered an “interrupted story”, at least on three occasions. For the purpose of (re)defining its story, known sources have been integrated with further information concerning the church, other historical events, and the life of its owners through the centuries. This paper investigates these interruptions and aims to present a plausible and coherent reconstruction of the “Saint Augustine’s panel real story”.

Abstract
Lazzaro Bastiani’s “Saint Augustine giving the Rule to the canons” is the central panel of a polyptych that was said to be in the Church of San Salvador from the late XVI century. The story of the artwork has been a very troubled one and can be considered an “interrupted story”, at least on three occasions. For the purpose of (re)defining its story, known sources have been integrated with further information concerning the church, other historical events, and the life of its owners through the centuries. This paper investigates these interruptions and aims to present a plausible and coherent reconstruction of the “Saint Augustine’s panel real story”.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
