The present work investigates the impact of the policy adopted by the Italian Government in August 1st, 2023, known as the “mandatory display of the Regional average fuel price” at the gas station level. Using data on fuel prices and gas stations (from the MIMIT) and municipal data (from ISTAT), the analysis examines the policy effect on fuel prices transparency and volatility through a Regression Discontinuity Design methodology where time is the running variable. Findings reveal no statistically significant changes in fuel prices, but for Liquefied Petroleum Gas and methane gas.
