The archaeological investigation carried out during the construction of the new parish complex in Pegognaga (Lombardy, Italy), necessitated by the damage caused by the 2012 earthquake, allowed for the collection of new elements to reconstruct the dynamics of the area in the Medieval period. These findings confirm and integrate what is known from written sources about the centuries around the turn of the Millennium. The archaeological data provide a better understanding of the local consequences of the establishing the castrum. Furthermore, the evidence of the castle church potentially dating back to around the year 1000 in the territorial area likely already influenced by the presence of a pieve (parish church) lays the foundation for a reflection on the relationship between the two religious buildings. This significance is further amplified by the circumstances under which the investigation began, which allowed for the observation of a clear and largely well-preserved stratigraphic deposit, located in the heart of the historic center with continuity from the Early Middle Ages to the present day.
