This study, part of the Italian GEIRD project, investigated the association between birthweight (BW) and respiratory outcomes in adults aged 20–84. Among 2,287 participants, those with low BW (<2500 g) had lower absolute lung volumes (FEV1 and FVC) and shorter stature, though lung function adjusted for height and predicted values showed no significant differences. Low BW was not linked to adult respiratory diseases like asthma or COPD but was associated with higher rates of severe respiratory infections and hospitalizations in early childhood. These findings suggest that low BW impacts early respiratory health but not adult lung function when adjusted for confounding factors.

Abstract
This study, part of the Italian GEIRD project, investigated the association between birthweight (BW) and respiratory outcomes in adults aged 20–84. Among 2,287 participants, those with low BW (<2500 g) had lower absolute lung volumes (FEV1 and FVC) and shorter stature, though lung function adjusted for height and predicted values showed no significant differences. Low BW was not linked to adult respiratory diseases like asthma or COPD but was associated with higher rates of severe respiratory infections and hospitalizations in early childhood. These findings suggest that low BW impacts early respiratory health but not adult lung function when adjusted for confounding factors.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
