This articles provides a new portrait of the German Enlightenment, which is often credited, alongside its French counterpart, with being one-sidedly optimistic and rationalistic. The evidence provided here supports a different view, i.e., that the German Enlightenment was well ware, on the on hand, of the weakness of reason and, on the other hand, of the power of prejudice.
