INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDY OF LANDSCAPE AND FLUVIAL GEOMORPHOLOGY. PROBLEMS, METHODS, FUTURE DEVELOPMENTThis paper sets out to examine the role of geography in the process of producing vital information for the management of fluvial regions. Historical cartography – an equally precious and complex resource – is presented and examined as representation of a territory as well as of its underlying cultural contexts.Analysis of the human and anthropic factors that have shaped the evolution of the floodplain of Stagno Lombardo, Pieve d’Olmi and San Daniele Po over four centuries – reconstructed using iconographic and other sources – is the core of a methodological approach that uses pre-geodetic maps within a complex information system that views GIS structuring as one of many instruments that this type of interdisciplinary research can produce as an aid to water governance agencies.
