The morphological paradigms of the verb belong to the most rigidly codified sub-systems of the standard language. However, in a translation task (oral translation of the Wenker sentences from the dialect into the intended standard language) a subtle variation emerges with the apocope of (a) -e as suffix, (b) -t as suffix/part of a suffix and (c) in the selection of the past tense form (Perfekt vs. Präteritum). In many cases standard variation mirrors dialect forms, e. g., the t-less type bis '(you, singular) are' in the Western German, the t-less type sin '(we/they) are' in the East Central German area. In other cases, however, dialect-different forms are conceptualized as intended-standard forms, e. g., Präteritum forms replace Perfekt forms in the Upper German area even though Präteritum forms largely disappeared in language use.
