The paper shows some research results which are drawn from a large project aimed at investigating what (new) normative beliefs and cultural frameworks guide the ways of thinking, acting and evaluating of parents in dual precarious couples and with what work and family subjective consequences. The focus is here on the analysis of the taken-for-granted aspects of discourse, that are silences and absences, and on their role in the day-to-day (re)production of wider societal and cultural norms. Specifically, the paper is aimed at understanding the role of silences on the (un)equal division of chores within the couple as well as silences on the taken-for-granted aspects of context, in the constitution and perpetuation of gender discourses (and practices) about how the world works and in the making others appear illegitimate or impossible.
