The Uomini Illustri and the lost decorations of the rooms of Palazzo Salerni in Verona offer a striking glimpse of the decorative customs in a space of private residence between the Fourteenth and the beginning of the Fifteenth Century. At the same time, the paintings shed light on one of Verona’s most influential families of the time. Proud and aware of their social ascent, the Salerni made their homes and their funerary chapel, sumptuously decorated, instruments of self-congratulation and family affirmation, supported in this by close ties with some of the most important painters of the time: Stefano di Giovanni di Francia, Giovanni Badile and his workshop.
