This special edition of the journal Encyclopaideia gathers eight articles presented at the third conference on “Equity, Social Justice and Adult Education and Learning Policy” organised by the ESREA Network on Policy Studies in Adult Education, which ran from 8–10 June 2017 at the University of Verona. Collectively, the essays address a broad cross-section of issues relating to responsibility, participation and social justice. They are guided by an implicit question: how much, and in what circumstances, is adult education still able to promote the emancipation of individuals and educational and social contexts, and to contribute to the attainment of social justice?
