This article examines some textual elements of Dante’s Questio de aqua et terra by re- constructing in particular the events concerning a lectio difficilior of the treatise: on the one hand the editorial history of this lectio highlights the progress of the philological dis- cipline in the text’s editions; on the other hand, it indicates in the necessary collaboration between philologists and philosophers the most useful way to reach a fuller understanding of the treatise.
