Sephardic Conversos’ literature is an example of the capacity of a minority culture (that is the Jewish one in Christian territories) to survive and save its identity both in propitious historical and social contexts (as for example for the Sephardic community in the Otoman Empire) and in dramatic moments (sadly this kind of examples should be numerous…). Today in the Departments of Hispanic Studies it’s rising a closer attention to the study and recovery of the Sephardic Conversos past, silenced or simply forgotten for a long time. In this paper I’ll present my own experience as a teacher and a researcher of this particular genre of literature; in particular, I’ll focus on two aspects: the didactics (that is, the experience with my students in the analysis of the novel Sefarad by Antonio Muñoz Molina) and the research (I’ll present the project ESTHER, dedicated to the study of the Sephardic theatre in Italy, from its origins to the present). The aim is to propose a debate on the importance of this topic in the academic field from an educational point of view; furthermore, I suggest a reflection on the interrelation between educational purposes and research freedom.
