Complete person names in the Republic of Armenia consist of given name, middle name (the father's name, usually in the genitive case ending with -i) and family name (usually with the onymic suffix -yan). Armenian name studies have a long history which goes back to the 19th century, however, with a strong focus on the etymologies mainly of the given names. The present paper systematically outlines the formation of family names: for the first time both quantitatively based on an almost complete name register of the population of Armenia and qualitatively using the concepts and the terminology of Western linguistics.

Abstract
Complete person names in the Republic of Armenia consist of given name, middle name (the father's name, usually in the genitive case ending with -i) and family name (usually with the onymic suffix -yan). Armenian name studies have a long history which goes back to the 19th century, however, with a strong focus on the etymologies mainly of the given names. The present paper systematically outlines the formation of family names: for the first time both quantitatively based on an almost complete name register of the population of Armenia and qualitatively using the concepts and the terminology of Western linguistics.File in questo prodotto:
