This paper aims to examine amphorae lids discovered during the archaeological excavations on the area of the former Cossar property, investigated by L. Bertacchi still in the ’60 and ’70 of the last century and furthermore since 2009 up today by the University of Padua, together with the Soprintendenza del Friuli Venezia Giulia and Fondazione Aquileia. Amongst the great quantity of stopper finds (almost 600 examples) the three main technological groups have been recognised: mould-made opercula, stoppers made by the means of the fast wheel techniques and lids obtained by cutting amphorae walls. Taking into consideration the stratigraphy a chronological overview has been proposed. The aim is to create a chronological base, still in progress, in order to link together the variety of analysed morphological data. A particular attention has been drawn to the upper part of the opercula representing letters, graphemes or decorative signs to better understand their meaning and to show their multiplicity. Considering the analysed materials two cases seem to be particularly elaborate from epigraphic point of view: the case study of a lid stamped Pilipus and another marked Alexa or Alexa(nder). Both cases are Greek names, probably refer to servus or libertus, may be related to some profitable pottery manufacture (in particular amphorae and stoppers).

Abstract
Both cases are Greek names, probably refer to servus or libertus, may be related to some profitable pottery manufacture (in particular amphorae and stoppers).File | Dimensione | Formato | |
