This essay focuses on the representation of the man developed by Tomás de Murillo y Velarde in terms of melancholy from the materials “stolen” from the first book entirely devoted to the subject, written in a different language than Latin, i.e. the book of the Spanish doctor Andrés Velásquez (Seville, 1585). Almost a century later, additions and different combinations of the chapters in the work by Velásquez underline, in the book of Murillo y Velarde (Zaragoza, 1672) – a Spanish doctor who took his priestly vows – a melancholy that opens to unusual relationships between spiritual dimension and corporeal dimension of the man, to unique therapies to cure it, to herbs and plants from the New World, never excluding the most effective means of Christian sacraments.
