This “Introduction” to the Skenè 2.2 (2016) Special Issue is dedicated to a discussion of the relation between diegesis and mimesis in drama and in genres consciously sharing aspects of drama, from Antiquity to the present. It draws the theoretical and conceptual framework, starting from Plato and Aristotle down to contemporary studies of semiotics of theatre and narratology of drama, and identifies some of the main issues at stake. It also tackles exemplary cases of the use of narration on stage with particular attention to early modern, modern and contemporary drama, suggesting further lines of inquiry in the contemporary critical panorama.
