We read with great interest the article by Suppiej et al. [Pediatric epilepsy following neonatal seizures symptomatic of stroke Brain Dev, 38 (2016), pp. 27–31] about post-neonatal epilepsy following neonatal seizures symptomatic of stroke and epilepsy occurred in approximately 16% of patients. They also report that their results are in contrast with those from previous studies and quote our paper commenting that ‘‘In the study by Pisani et al. [Neonatal seizures and postneonatal epilepsy: A 7-y follow-up study (2012) Pediatric Research, 72 (2), pp. 186-193] the finding of abnormalities in fetal cerebral ultrasounds and family history of epilepsy as independent risk factors for later epilepsy suggest the recruitment of a population including patients with genetic or prenatal etiology of seizures.” For readers of Brain and Development we would like to clarify that fetal cerebral ultrasound was not analyzed in this or other studies that address the onset of epilepsy in patients with neonatal seizures.
