The aim of this paper is the analysis of some periphrastic verb constructions in Hittite that display particular features connected to the category of Aktionsart. In particular we focus on a typology recognised by Engerer 2014 and forthcoming as the semantic closed class of phasal or phase verbs. They are cross-linguistically represented in many languages and related to other features to describe the main verbal phases (Ingressive, Egressive and Continue) and Aktionsart, aspect and tense relations. We will show the relation between the semantic meaning of each verb and the whole construction resulting from conditioned combinations.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is the analysis of some periphrastic verb constructions in Hittite that display particular features connected to the category of Aktionsart. In particular we focus on a typology recognised by Engerer 2014 and forthcoming as the semantic closed class of phasal or phase verbs. They are cross-linguistically represented in many languages and related to other features to describe the main verbal phases (Ingressive, Egressive and Continue) and Aktionsart, aspect and tense relations. We will show the relation between the semantic meaning of each verb and the whole construction resulting from conditioned combinations.
