This book is a study guide for students of adult education with an exquisite interest in the dynamics of policy strategies that affect the field within the European context. As such, it systematizes and benefits from the authors’ experience in teaching this type of students, in 2008 and subsequent years, at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. In comparison with other textbooks found in the field, it has a rather unique character. Contrary to a handbook, this book has no pretention of becoming a reference work providing a complete treatise on its subject matter, but it offers a plausible introduction to the complexity of European adult education and lifelong learning policy environment. Aware that no book is flawless, and textbooks introducing students to a new area of scholarship present own difficulties, this book’s strength is in its very focus on policy strategies and political actors beyond the purview of governments, and the challenge these poses for teachers in adult education: how can we make students aware of, and enable them to critically asses, such processes?
