The knowledge economy and lifelong learning. A critical reader

This book bridges an important gap in the literature as it questions taken-for-granted assumptions about the challenges that the knowledge economy poses to further growth and expansion of contemporary societies, and attempt assessing under which conditions lifelong learn- ing proves an adequate response. As a ‘reader’, the book pools together much of already published material with the addition of fewer original pieces by as many as 28 scholars, several of whom have a long tradition in examining the relations between economic growth, work, education and learning. In sum, one can easily agree with the editors’ claims (p. 350) that the book expands on the knowledge-based economy conception, yet is left with the impression that its counterpart, the lifelong learning conception, results as somewhat constrained by this book. Despite these critical remarks, the book remains a valuable reference for many to consult, including readership of this journal.
