This contribution proposes an analysis of ‘expletive’ negation in German temporal clauses (bevor-clauses). It confirms Krifka’s 2010 insight that expletive negation is fully interpreted in bevor-clauses, and that what is required to derive the correct truth-conditions for these double-negation sentences is a view of compositionality in which semantic and pragmatic principles are strictly intertwined. At the same time, the present treatment eliminates some unnecessary stipulations and makes some clear-cut empirical predictions, which enhance the overall empirical adequacy of the proposal
