This article studies the efficiency of the hospitals located in the Italian region of Veneto by using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and identifies the operational and environmental variables which could explain its trend. The study improves prior literature with an in depth analysis of the factors affecting the efficiency of a Regional Health Systemin the period from 2011 to 2012. The data has been collected with the collaboration of the planning and control office of the Regione Veneto. Results highlight a negative impact on efficiency of the average age of the population, hospitalization days and the presence of an emergency department; while the number of beds exerts a positive effect on efficiency.
