Nel saggio vengono trattati i più importanti capitelli ad incrostazione di mastice dell'area nord-adriatica. Le opere sono messe in relazione con la cultura dell'oriente bizantino, soprattutto della periferia greca, e con le correnti estetiche islamiche fiorite fra la fine del X e l'inizio dell'XI secolo.
