Abstract

TCMPs from fresh tomato fruit and from industrial processed products, were purified by size exclusion and HPLC chromatography. The effect of fruit TCMP was evaluated on endothelial cell migration. Our data showed that TCMP (200 nmol L-1) inhibits by approximately 50% the increase in endothelial cell migration induced by VEGF-A (10 ng mL-1) and by EGF (5 ng mL-1) plus VEGF-A.Since cystine-knot proteins are present in edible parts of plants, these compounds should be endowed with low toxicity when tested in animal models and humans and may be of potential pharmacological interest
