Investigated the pattern of psychotropic drug consumption in 453 community residents (aged 14+ yrs) of South Verona, Italy, via a cross-sectional community survey. 15.0% of the Ss were taking psychotropic drugs (benzodiazepines 13.5%, antidepressants 2.2%, neuroleptics 1.1%). Prevalence was higher in females (20.0%), in Ss over 45 yrs old (25%), and in Ss with high General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) scores (26.2%), poor physical health (27.0%), social problems (20.0%), distressing events (22.0%), or alcohol abuse (32.3%). Logistic regression analysis shows that age, sex, GHQ score, physical ill-health, and life events were significantly and independently associated with psychotropic drug consumption.
