This essay addresses the issues of cultural heritage and the processes of heritage-making through the analysis of a specific case: the concept of "objets ambassadeurs" proposed and supported by the Kanak of New Caledonia. From a discussion of the issues on repatriation considered within the wider context of indigenous peoples' rights, we highlight the creative and original aspects of the vision of the"ambassador objects" proposal. After tracing the genesis of this idea by placing it within the existing conflict dynamics affecting New Caledonian society, we give an account of a particular outcome in terms of a museum collaboration: an exhibition on Kanak Bamboos organized by museums in Geneva (MEG) and Noumea (MNC). Such shared paths enhance (not without conflicts / tensions) the connections and sharing of the past and of the present, rather than irreducible and exclusive cultural belonging.

Abstract
Such shared paths enhance (not without conflicts / tensions) the connections and sharing of the past and of the present, rather than irreducible and exclusive cultural belonging.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
