Discusses contributions made by the research unit of the Servizio di Psicologia Medica (SPM), which was developed to evaluate specialist care received by patients from community-based services, and the South-Verona Community Psychiatric Service (CPS). Present studies suggest that long-term community care by the South-Verona CPS induces less service dependence and chronic use than do hospital-based systems of care. A follow-up study of 60 South-Verona residents with a diagnosis of schizophrenic or other functional nonaffective psychosis found the Ss living in a variety of conditions, but none who were judged to need support were without it. Research findings are presented on psychiatric morbidity in general practice, in the community, and on the epidemiology of suicide. ((c) 1997 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved)
