Examined relationships between physical health, life events (LEs), social problems (SPs), and emotional distress (ED) in 226 men and 225 women. Most men reported good physical health, while most women reported physical symptoms. A higher number of undesirable LEs was associated with a higher number of SPs, poorer physical health, and ED. In men, physical symptoms and widowed, separated, or divorced marital status were associated with ED. In women, there was a significant interaction between SPs and undesirable LEs. In both sexes, ED was best predicted by undesirable LEs and SPs. Separate logistic regression models for men and women confirmed the importance of undesirable LEs and SPs as predictors for ED.
