Abstract

This Editorial aimed to emphasize the importance of the work of professor Montagna’s group (Pizza et al., 2011) providing normative data in adult healthy subjects regarding the amount of slow eye movements (SEMs) throughout the different phases of the entire overnight sleep. Their data are discussed in the light of the sleep homeostasis and synaptic downscaling hypotheses (Tononi and Cirelli, 2006).
