In the framework of analytical ontology there has recently been a renewed interest in categorization, which has contributed, in addition to a greater awareness of its fields of application and limits, to a lively discussion about what ontological categories should be considered as fundamental and how they should be organised into a system containing all types of existing entities. Part of this debate involves Jonathan Lowe’s ontological proposal, here presented and discussed through the analysis of his ontological system, which recognizes four basic categories: kinds, attributes, objects and modes. According to Lowe, these categories have their own a priori ontological status and supply a reference frame by which the conditions of existence and identity of all entities are defined.

Abstract
In the framework of analytical ontology there has recently been a renewed interest in categorization, which has contributed, in addition to a greater awareness of its fields of application and limits, to a lively discussion about what ontological categories should be considered as fundamental and how they should be organised into a system containing all types of existing entities. Part of this debate involves Jonathan Lowe’s ontological proposal, here presented and discussed through the analysis of his ontological system, which recognizes four basic categories: kinds, attributes, objects and modes. According to Lowe, these categories have their own a priori ontological status and supply a reference frame by which the conditions of existence and identity of all entities are defined.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
