Abstract

Discussion of the illustrative material featured in editions of the statutes and in other official publications pertaining to the Order of St John, printed between 1493 and 1784. Particularly interesting in this context is the 1586 edition of the order’s statutes, published during the grand mastership of Hugh Loubenx de Verdalle. Demonstration that such publications can be used as a public relations exercise which, through the use of such visual depictions, served to highlight the achievements of the Knights, their worth as defenders of Christendom and, subsequently, their claim to sovereign power, unfettered from papal or feudal subjection.
