The object of this article is an emblematic aspect of Éric Chevillard’s writing. Among the nineteen novels he’s created so far, we have focused our attention on Du hérisson: in this novel you can easily notice that every page is made up of isolated paragraphs, as if it was literally smashed into pieces. Actually, the narrator and writer, who’s here trying to write his own autobiography, attributes the regular presence of white gaps between the paragraphs to the improbable appearance of an hedgehog on his paper. So, in this joking but complicated novel, Chevillard uses the hedgehog as the unexpected symbol of his ambiguous poetics. It’s up to the spiky pet, much more than a simple animal, to incarnate the unsolvable doubts referred to the authenticity of the autobiography and to the uncertain form of the text.
