Confronting the complexities of the new century, Clinical Microbiology (CM) is evolving into multiple dimensions. In its original meaning, CM primarily deals with the etiological diagnosis of human and animal infections, and it also goes as far as to suggest the possible outcome of the infectious process in any individual patient for which a given antimicrobial treatment is considered. Since the early phases CM, these tasks and their accomplishment have always followed - and have been regulated by - the classical Koch's postulates.

Abstract

Confronting the complexities of the new century, Clinical Microbiology (CM) is evolving into multiple dimensions. In its original meaning, CM primarily deals with the etiological diagnosis of human and animal infections, and it also goes as far as to suggest the possible outcome of the infectious process in any individual patient for which a given antimicrobial treatment is considered. Since the early phases CM, these tasks and their accomplishment have always followed - and have been regulated by - the classical Koch's postulates.
